Through what OPTIMUS calls “L.A. STREET ROCK” he aims to change the game with his debut album, The Whethaman.
When asked to describe his music, OPTIMUS quotes “If ‘The Roots’ and ‘Sublime’ had a baby and this baby was illegitimately brought up by ‘Led Zepplin’ and beaten up in school by ‘Eminem’ but best friends with ‘Nas’, that’s what it sounds like!!!”
OPTIMUS’ music defies categorization, blending his many influences into a style all his own. Spitting riveting lyrics with his signature flow over rock riffs and reggae rhythms OPTIMUS’ wants his music to be recognized for its originality and organic live spin. Without the use of computers and samples, The Whethaman, is a purely organic record, solely composed of live instrumentals and vocals.
If you’ve ever listened to hip hop you’ve already heard his music. OPTIMUS has written for and performed with West Coast hip hop legends, The Roots, DJ Lethal, Pharcyde, Cannibus, Styles of Beyond, Hieroglyphics and Warren G. He won his first record deal at the age of 15 and signed his first solo deal at the age of 16. Yet OPTIMUS epitomizes the underdog, having been glorified and vilified by his own industry time and time again. As a young hungry kid his talent and knack for writing catchy tunes and dope rap lyrics landed him ghost-writing opportunities with some of the most prestigious rap names in the business.
What OPTIMUS strives to be recognized for is his honesty. “A lot of rappers in the game tell lies to sell records. I write about what I see, things I do, and advice for people who need it, but most of all, how I feel. I’m vulnerable. Most say rappers can’t be vulnerable but I am, everything gets to me and that’s what inspire me to rhyme.”
OPTIMUS’ biggest music influences include Run DMC, Sublime, A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Nas, Rakim, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Nirvana, The Fugees and Pink Floyd.
On a final note OPTIMUS asks,“ Keep an open mind my people, the world is changing like your grandmama’s underpants, hopefully everyday!”
